<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It will have been 4 years since the previous blog post and almost 3 years since the old LBColby YouTube channel was deleted.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">A lot has happened during this time - the entire run of Dynasty and The Colbys is now out on DVD, a new incarnation of Dallas ran (and ended) on TNT, new Dynasty's fate appears to have been sealed, a new generation of primetime soaps like FOX's Empire have emerged and, sadly, some familiar faces of yesteryear like Dynasty's Kate O'Mara or Dallas' Larry Hagman have passed away.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">On one hand, I regret I have not recorded these events as they happened on the blog and the channel, but that doesn't mean I'm done with Dynasty for good.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In fact, I will shortly resume my posting activities on both this blog and the new YouTube channel, which has been live since October 30, 2012 (but hasn't really been updated since that day beyond the initial 15 or so videos).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Many of the videos I posted on the original YouTube channel are gone for good as I was not able to store copies of them on my hard drive. But I have saved quite a few of them and I will re-post them in the coming weeks, adding some new content, too.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">There will also be new content on this blog, including pictures, old articles, more episode guide, etc. I won't make any promises concerning the posting frequency this time, we'll just have to see where it goes from here.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">If you have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding the video channel, I'll be happy to see them below.lbcolbyblogspothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10435657326747112944noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426638679882620813.post-3359431100904567152011-07-14T09:45:00.000-07:002011-07-14T09:45:02.938-07:00THE COLBYS #2.23 "Betrayals"

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">My plan to post the last 3 remaining episodes of "The Colbys" last month didn't work out, those of you with blogs on Blogger may know why - it was not possible to publish anything the last couple of days of June.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In the meantime, I left for my seaside holiday and could not finish up posting immediately after Google fixed Blogger. The good news is that I am back from my holiday and I will now post the final 3 episodes of "The Colbys."

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Thank you for all the comments and suggestions - I'll try to keep this blog alive with additional updates even after I post the final episode of "The Colbys," and some new videos may occasionally pop up on my YouTube channel, as well.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The next episode will be posted next Thursday, July 21 and then watch out for the big UFO finale on Thursday, July 28.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I'm happy to say, my favorite season of "DYNASTY" came out on top in our recent "What are your favorite DYNASTY seasons" poll.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The second season of "DYNASTY" that begins with the arrival of Joan Collins as Blake Carrington's ex-wife Alexis Morell Carrington got most of the votes (you were allowed to vote for all seasons that you liked).<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I personally couldn't agree more, that was the year when Alexis gave "Dynasty" fresh energy (and soapier storylines).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I especially like the first 4 episodes of the season, I can watch them over and over again.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Most of the scenes take place within the confines of the Carrington property (always a plus with me), there's a sense of exotic mystery surrounding Alexis, she has great chemistry with Krystle, new cast additions gel well with the original cast (I loved Sammy Jo), there's fresh and genuine conflict, the season has strong structure... what's not to love?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It's not very easy to find a new direction for a show following a solid season and a great climax and many shows stumble (season 2 of "Desperate Housewives" comes to mind).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">And that is especially hard when that season doesn't do well in the ratings ("Dynasty's" initial ratings disappointed ABC) and the producers scramble to find a new formula that works while facing certain cancellation.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">But Eileen and Robert Mason Pollock certainly did it with the brilliant second season.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">As far as the look of the show alone is concerned, I probably like seasons 3 and 4 the most. That's when they truly ramped up the glitz, the ladies wore some of the most beautiful outfits of the entire series, and the show got all wrapped in the most luxurious of trinkets.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Or as Gordon Thomson once put it: "it was all so squishily rich - a huge, big sundae for the audience."<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I won't go into each season here, as they would require a more detailed and separate analysis, but I'll say I believe the scripts did begin to deteriorate after that second year, though the moment it really begins to upset me is the beginning of season 5, following Pamela Sue Martin's departure.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Some people believe "Dynasty" went down after its 2nd season, some note the resolution of the Moldavian massacre as the "jump-the-shark" moment, some may even say it never happened and they love it all.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">For me, the show's decline begins with Pamela Sue's departure, then things improve as the season progresses. But the "Royal Wedding" aftermath is another blow; and finally the new "family-friendlier" direction following "A Love Remembered" in season 7 is where I think the show goes completely off track and into utter tedium.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">So, I voted for seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4. Here's how those of you who voted on this poll last month felt:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">As you can see, I was too busy to post this episode last week, so you've had to endure a 14-day wait, sorry about that, but that happens when this blog is a hobby and other duties call.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I think Linda Evans fans are really going to love this post. Following recent Joan Collins and Stephanie Beacham collections, here are now as many as 20 HQ photographs of "Dynasty's" original principal lady - Linda Evans.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">There are promo shots for Linda as Krystle, stills taken from the actual show, as well as a couple of public appearances, all from those great days when "Dynasty" was on the air and people flocked to the screen to root for that adorable and sensitive pretty lady.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I personally loved Linda's look in the first three seasons of the show (and perhaps in the second half of season 5). Not because she was obviously younger there, but because her hair, make-up and clothes suited her very well and she looks just as great in those episodes today.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Though Linda, as we know, sported her trademark "Krystle" hairstyle from the beginning to the end of the series, the look did change somewhat over the years and I really didn't care too much for season 4 and 7 versions (e.g. see picture 12 below), which I find dated today.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Low-cut neckline also became increasingly absent from Nolan Miller's designs for Krystle in latter years. I thought that was a shame - Linda looked much more beautiful when she would expose her feminine features and skip the buttoned-up look.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Someone asked in the comments section the other day for a pix post with Stephanie Beacham's HQ promo stills from "Dynasty" and "The Colbys" along the lines of the one I did for Joan Collins on her birthday.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I don't unfortunately have all the Beacham stills ABC released to promote the two shows, but I did try to come up with something (it includes a public appearance by Beacham with her "Colbys" co-star John James).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">This is one of my favorite episodes of "The Colbys." Not only does "Hoyt Parker" finally reveal himself to the family, but it gives Stephanie Beacham a lot of great material to work with. And seeing Miles in his polo outfit back on a horse, doesn't hurt either.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Again, apologies for a two-day delay (due to my heavy working schedule this week), the next episode should be posted as usual on Thursday night next week. That means we now have only 5 episodes left, and you'll be able to see them by the end of June.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">A couple of articles now from the summer of 1988 after "Dallas" producer David Paulsen came on board to try to salvage "Dynasty" in its upcoming 9th season, which proved to be <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">the fading soap<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"> last.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Paulsen talks about the changes he was implementing including casting 3 new supporting characters (2 of which ended up quickly written out), toning down the show's trademark glitz and giving screen time to people "from all walks of life."

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Paulsen did have his work cut out for him - ABC moved the show to the ultra-competitive timeslot Thursday nights at 9:00pm that year and the summer hiatus was 7 instead of 4 months (because of the writer's strike).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">As much as I loved seeing "The Colbys" star Stephanie Beacham on "Dynasty" and the idea of tapping into the show's back-story was exciting, I really didn't care much for most of the stories that year (Adam's sudden shift to being evil, mishandled exits of Leslie and Dana, a tedious Virginia ("Grace Kelly-like relative" in early outlines) and her contrived connection to Dex, a de-fanged Sammy Jo and her snoozefest romance with the priest, the hokey revelation that Miles and Monica are not Colbys and Jason's out-of-character turning his back on them , etc., etc.)

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Yes, the writing in the years leading up to season 9 was bad and needed significant improvement, but the tone and the look of the show in season 9 was wrong for "Dynasty" and it could not have translated into higher ratings - on the contrary, the show lost a third of its audience in the course of the season.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Messing with the show's core formula that turned it into a massive hit in seasons 2-5 (female-centric soap opera built around the troika of Blake-Krystle-Alexis) and losing/reducing several principal (and popular) cast members exacerbated the decline (along with the bad timeslot and lack of promotion, of course).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The feud is still on. Would Joan Collins bring the play "Legends" to the UK? "Not with Linda Evans!" said Dynasty diva on Paul O'Grady's ITV chat show last night.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Of course, "Legends" is not a very good play, so I don't think anyone would actually consider bringing it, period, but the remark echoes the one Linda made about Joan a couple of years ago ("I survived 9 years with Joan Collins, so I can survive this"), so if "Dynasty" even returns don't count on those two sharing any screen time again.<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Also last night, Joan spoke of her plans to bring her "One Woman Show" she did last November in New York to London in the summer, and then take it to Australia in November.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Collins also mentioned her upcoming book #13 "The World According to Joan," an update of her autobiography and reflection on the world today.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">When it comes to UK chat show hosts, I personally prefer Graham Norton to Paul O'Grady, so I hope Collins makes an appearance on his show, too, whenever she needs to promote one of her projects.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Last week CBS announced their fall prime time schedule and "The Assistants," a comedy pilot starring Heather Locklear they were considering for the 2011/12 season, was not on it.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">9 comedy pilots vied for a spot on the CBS schedule, but the network needed only two.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Locklear was in a similar situation 4 years ago, when ABC decided not to pick up the comedy pilot called "See Jayne Run" in which she starred.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Locklear's last regular prime-time gig (apart from The CW's failed 2009 attempt to revive Aaron Spelling's "Melrose Place") was in a short-lived 2004 NBC airport security procedural "LAX" co-starring Blair Underwood.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Recently, Locklear has appeared in a string of Lifetime made-for-TV movies, the last of which ("He Loves Me") aired earlier this year.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Personally, I would rather see Locklear return in a fresh prime-time soap than comedy, that is after all what she is best at - playing a bitchy soap minx.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">But will Heather be able to stage another career comeback? Her career was mostly based upon late Aaron Spelling productions - "T.J. Hooker" and "Dynasty" in the 80s and "Melrose Place" in the 90s. The three years she spent on ABC's sitcom "Spin City" came about following the success of "Melrose Place."

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">But she hasn't been on a hit show for almost a decade and she's had to deal with a number of personal issues in recent years.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I always thought Locklear's "Sammy Jo" brought spark and magic even to the most dreadful of "Dynasty" episodes and she was even more critical to the success of "Melrose Place," a show she is credited with saving. I will therefore most certainly be rooting for Heather, while also hoping she returns to her soapy roots.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426638679882620813.post-73577472214982700142011-05-23T13:00:00.000-07:002011-05-23T13:09:30.369-07:00Happy Birthday, Joan Collins!!!

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Joan Collins is 78 today. Happy birthday, 'Alexis'! And many more to come... To celebrate, I'm posting an EXTENDED UNCUT VERSION of her Piers Morgan 2010 interview (with additional 20 minutes of footage you couldn't see in the videos I originally posted on YouTube). Check it out, after the jump.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The actress who recently returned from the U.S. to her native England will appear on ITV's "The Paul O'Grady Show" later this week (Friday, May 27th at 9:00pm local time). I hope to have the video posted on Saturday morning.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Also, over on my original YouTube channel, I just posted a rare Joan Collins appearance on ABC's daytime talk show "LIVE! with Regis & Kathie Lee" <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">in September 1988<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">, a couple of months prior to the beginning of season 9.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In the video, Collins talks about her first fiction book "Prime Time" which she released and promoted at the time. Although Collins later became vocal about the possibility of her "Dynasty" exit, there is no mention of that here.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The 4-bedroom 5-bathroom ranch house, built in 1937, came with a rose garden and a swimming pool. <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Evans bought the property in 1981 for $590,000.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Before selling the property, Evans (who has resided in Tacoma, Washington for years) had previously listed the house in 2007 for lease. The monthly rental fee she asked for was $14,500.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Now Evans has decided to get rid of the house for good. But she did have to settle for less. When she listed the property in November 2010 her original asking price was $3,29 million.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Today's edition of DYNASTY Pix is obviously all about Joan Collins. I'll be sharing with you several HQ promo pics for Joan as her DYNASTY character Alexis Colby released by the ABC TV network back in the 80s, during the various stages of the series and depicting several of her iconic looks.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">One of "The Colbys" boys will be celebrating as tonight we finally learn who the father of Fallon's baby is.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I personally loved the confrontation scene between Jeff and Channing. It's always great to see gradually building tensions escalating.
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">A couple of notes concerning the videos below: I had to remove the opening credits from this episode to ensure that the first segment fits within the 15-minute limit.
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Also, my copy of the episode does not contain the last few seconds, so I simply added the missing moments from the next episode's "Last time on the Colbys" preview.
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">You will therefore notice a little change in quality at the end of the episode (and a few seconds are still missing).
<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">A quick look at the storylines that DYNASTY producers Bob and Eileen Pollock envisioned for season 3 (1982/83) that had been either entirely scrapped or simply went into a different direction.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Here are some observations I made while going through the document (for which I am once again eternally grateful to Gilles who has been very kind to me). I'll add my comments later on.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Sammy Jo was initially scheduled to appear only mid-season. Her second appearance was added later.

Cecil was supposed to die (after a quickie wedding to Alexis at the hospital) in the season premiere. If the actor wasn't available, he was going to be killed off off-screen.

Claudia was originally supposed to depart the show in the 3rd episode forever.

Scenes with Kate Torrance dying were originally going to take place in a Billings hospital.

Blake was going to be saved by a rescue helicopter.

The cemetery caretaker was supposed to be questioned by the police as one of the suspects, but he would have turned out innocent.

The baby was supposed to have been stolen by Claudia.

She would have left him at a day care center, before going with him to Grand Junction, Colorado.

Blake was supposed to have rescued L.B. from atop an unfinished highrise building in GJ where Claudia would have run with him.

Instead of blaming herself for being a bad mother, Fallon blames Jeff for dragging her to an inane meeting with a minister.

La Mirada was originally called Eldorado and the new name was going to be Xanadu (instead of La Mirage).

Krystle was more reproachful regarding Fallon's decision to take on the hotel project, calling her spoiled and self-centered.

The relationship between Blake and Jeff was going to be more strained in the light of his failing marriage and move to Colbyco.

Rashid Ahmed was supposed to make an appearance asking Alexis for a loan - Fallon was going to use him at the opening of Xanadu to add some of Rashid's oriental glamour to the ceremony.

There were going to be more scenes from Fallon's hotel dealing with her renovation efforts - fights with an assistant who opposes changes; problems with mobsters who want to be suppliers, etc.

Blake was going to meet Adam and Fallon at "Eldorado" and tell them they were siblings, not Alexis.

After Jeff vetoes Adam's activities against Denver-Carington, Alexis tries to get him to go along with Adam by seducing Jeff, but he rejects her.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Adam then concocts his poisoning plan, based upon a true story (a US ambassador in Rome), not a case of his own.

Alexis was then going to find out about Adam's plan to poison Jeff and she was quietly going to go along with it.

Fallon despises Krystle and learns who Mark is even before she hires him. She and Alexis plot to hurt Krystle together. Fallon arranges the meeting between Mark and Krystle, not Alexis. And Krystle first sees him as Blake plays a match with Mark, not knowing he is Krystle's first husband.

Krystle immediately tells Blake about Mark and the phony divorce.

Neil McVane was originally called Lester Varney.

When Jeff attacks Fallon, she is not saved by Mark, she defends herself by throwing a lamp at Jeff. The whole room is a mess when their fight is over.

Fallon begins an affair with Mark earlier, she is jealous when he meets Krystle.

Fallon learns Jeff signed LB's shares over to Alexis (while being poisoned) and decides to remain married to him so she can ask courts to give her control over the shares and fight Adam and Alexis and protect Blake. At which point she receives the letter from Steven (probably later than it played out on-screen).

Jeff collapses from paint poisoning while playing tennis at a charity match.

Michael Cullhane was going to re-appear. Adam was going to buy him to testify at the trial concerning <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">conservatorship of Jeff's estate <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">and help thwart Fallon's efforts.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Little Kirby development, no marriage to Jeff, we do know she is interested in him. <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Triangle with Adam and rape are not mentioned.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
Steven was going to be a somewhat stronger and more determined character upon his return.

Alexis was going to oppose Steven raising his son as a gay man along with the rest of the family. Only Fallon would come to Steven's defense and Steven was going to work for her at "Xanadu," not Alexis at Colbyco.

Blake was going to find out about the paint poisoning and blackmail Alexis INTO merging DC and Colbyco - with him at the helm of the new company.

Krystle was going to leave Blake after becoming jealous over the amount of time he was spending with Alexis because of the merger.

Alexis tries to seduce Blake but he rejects her.

Krystle meanwhile rejects Mark, but Mark goes crazy and attacks her, trying to disfigure her face. This is the cliffhanger.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Ever since "Dynasty's" Carrington clan got off the Moldavian church floor unscathed and Bobby came out of THE shower over on "Dallas" the press sang soaps' swan song. This Wall Street Journal article concerning the dire state of soaps was however published just 3 days before ABC swung the axe and cancelled the aging soap.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The article (which I wasn't able to scan, so I'm reproducing it in its entirety below) appeared in the May 18, 1989 (Thursday) edition of the paper and it makes the end of "Dynasty" seem imminent, though no official decision had been made (or rather - announced). By Monday, ABC sealed its fate.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In addition to giving you some insight into the state of the prime time soap opera genre at the time, the article reveals several interesting facts concerning "Dynasty":

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- The production cost of one episode of "Dynasty" had swollen to $1.3 million

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- ABC's ad revenue from each episode had dropped to $1.1 million (by comparison, in Dynasty's heyday each 30-second commercial would pull in well over quarter of a million)

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- 8 million people stopped watching "Dynasty" in the course of its 9th season (or 27% of its audience)

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- "Dynasty" lost 36% of its female audience during the final season

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- By comparison "Dallas" and "Falcon Crest" lost only 2 and 3 million viewers, respectively, and "Knots Landing" actually went up in the ratings that same year (despite being older than "Dynasty")

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- "Dynasty" producers saved $1.2 million and $1 million by cutting Linda Evans' and Joan Collins' appearances

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- If there had been a 10th season, there would have been additional cost-cutting (i.e. cast reductions)

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Although the production studio could have continued to make quite a bit of money money on "Dynasty" with international sales, syndication and "Dynasty" merchandise, the show was no longer profitable for the network (unless they had significantly decreased the license fee).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Here is now the article:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">TV's FLASHY NIGHTTIME SOAPS

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">SWIRL DOWN THE RATINGS DRAIN

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">May 18, 1989|By Dennis Kneale, Wall Street Journal
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
The rich and ruthless are having a tough time of it these days on the nighttime soaps. Tune into Dallas and you'll find oil bar on J.R. Ewing wedded to a dirt-poor country bumpkin. On Dynasty the silk-lined Krystle has fallen into a coma. Turn to Falcon Crest and having-it-all Maggie is getting chewed out by a waitress.

For anyone watching - and fewer than ever are - the message is clear: Rich is out. After a decade of fly-in-your-face wealth - Nolan Miller gowns, $1,000 snakeskin boots and smoking jackets to die for - after hundreds of hours of melodrama, materialism and modern immorality, the prime-time soaps may be going down the drain.

This season more than 2 million viewers have left Dallas, at 12 years the granddaddy of the lot. More than 3 million have given up Falcon Crest. As for Dynasty, that paradigm of flash and trash has lost 8 million people - 27 percent of its audience.

Only Knots Landing is doing well. Spun off from Dallas in 1980, it gained 1.5 million viewers this season. One reason: It shuns emeralds, empires and estates to focus on the more homespun travails of Karen and Mack and two other middle-class couples, who live on a cul-de-sac in Southern California.

''We're all sick and tired of watching shows about rich people as the economy presses on a lot of others,'' says Meredith Berlin, editor-in-chief of Soap Opera Digest. ''We're more interested in our own interiors: how we think, what we feel.''

''There was never anything bigger-than-life about Knots. Still isn't,'' says executive producer David Jacobs, the show's creator. ''When you watch Dallas, you're watching them. When you watch Knots, you're watching us.'' That's why Knots never generated the excitement or the ratings of the flashier soaps, he says - and why Knots may yet outlive them.

Audiences that once lapped up the philandering and finagling of the ultra-rich now prefer shows like thirtysomething, about angst-filled yuppies who tirelessly analyze their insides, and the blue-collar comedy Roseanne. The heroes of the new drama Dream Street run a refrigeration business in New Jersey.

The soaps still have their diehard fans, of course; and they still attract advertisers ''who want their commercials in a glamorous setting - people with nice hair and nice clothing,'' says Betsy Frank, senior vice president at Saatchi & Saatchi.

But the soaps are the most expensive shows to produce. An episode of Dynasty costs ABC $1.3 million or so - yet brings in only $1.1 million in ads after commissions. For his starring role on Dallas, Larry Hagman, a k a J.R., is paid about $150,000 a show, or $3.9 million for a full season. Each Dallas episode costs up to $1.6 million and brings in only about as much in net ad sales. Worse, ad revenues are limited because soaps do poorly in reruns and are aired only once.

In a last-ditch effort to stage a melodramatic comeback, soap producers are shaving costs, experimenting with new plot twists, bringing in grubbier characters and shedding stars. Dynasty fans freaked this season when the sterling-haired Blake Carrington bade farewell to his beloved wife, the relentlessly plucky Krystle. She underwent brain surgery and wound up comatose.

The painful truth: The producers cut Krystle (Linda Evans) to only six episodes this year, from all 22 episodes that aired last season, saving more than $1.2 million. Next year, she is unlikely to be back at all. Krystle's nemesis, the villainous vixen Alexis Morel Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan, played by Joan Collins, has appeared in only 13 of the 22 episodes done this season - another $1 million saved.

David Paulson, executive supervising producer of Dynasty, says he doesn't want to sound callous, but ''over time the stars of the shows make more and more money. All these shows are cutting back. It's just gotten too expensive. And we'll have to cut more, if the show is to come back.''

The producers' scalpel must be used delicately. Three years ago Bobby Ewing died tragically on Dallas, only to emerge a season later from a long, hot shower. The feeble explanation was that his death - and the entire previous season - was just his wife's bad dream. Viewers are still miffed. ''We used to watch Dallas until they brought Bobby back, and we said there goes a whole year wasted. We haven't watched since,'' says John Shelton, a corn farmer in Hanover, Ind.

Dallas executive producer Leonard Katzman has taken note. ''We'll be careful killing anybody in the future.'' he says. ''You're only allowed one shower scene per series.'' Sue Ellen will leave Dallas this season, still standing; the conniving blonde Abby will be alive, if not so well off, when she leaves Knots.

In an attempt to woo viewers, soap producers are downscaling the upscale, mixing a few real people with the swells. Dynasty has introduced a streetwise Italian cop - hardly a denizen of the Social Register - who has fallen in love with Carrington daughter Fallon.

On Falcon Crest, the young waitress Kelley, a new character, loses her boyfriend and accuses the upper-crust Maggie of stealing him: ''It's so unfair. You have everything!'' The series also has introduced a struggling Hispanic family. So far, however, these fixes ''haven't been as successful as I would've hoped. It's going to take more time,'' says Michael Filerman, an executive producer of both Falcon Crest and Knots.

But adding Regular Joes won't save tired formulas and stale stories: it's getting harder to contrive fresh plots. On CBS, Dallas has done 307 episodes, Knots has hit 237 and Falcon Crest is up to 206. (All three are from Warner Communications' Lorimar.) Spelling Entertainment's Dynasty, on ABC, has completed 217 shows; its cliffhanger - perhaps its last episode ever - aired last Thursday.

''I keep thinking, boy, are they pulling at straws. They have no stories left,'' says a former fierce soap fan, Rochelle Rachelson of New York. In seasons past, she'd never leave the set when the soaps were on. Now, ''I'm doing my checkbook when they're on. Dallas is just so bad. Dynasty is an embarrassment. I huff when I watch it. I talk out loud to myself - Oh c'mon already! Who cares!''

Indeed. Battles over child custody are commonplace. Searches for hidden art treasures are close to cliche (Dynasty is having one now). Amnesia? Seven chararcters, including J.R.'s stepfather Clayton of late, have woken up to wonder ''Who am I?'' Three leading ladies have taken ill and left rather than burden their mates.

And by now, everyone has slept with just about everyone else. On Falcon Crest, the trollop Melissa had been with Cole, Richard and Lance, among others.

''She'd been all over the valley. There was no one left for her to do,'' says Filerman, the executive producer. Solution: Kill her off, then bring back the same actress as a hooker who looks just like her.

Actors overlap, too. This year Dallas introduced Tommy, the crack-fiend brother of Bobby's girlfriend. Then the same actor showed up on Dynasty as a corpse, dead for 20 years and very well preserved.

These are sad days for a once-rich lode. In the decades before Dallas, the wealthy were rarely depicted on TV. The networks figured that viewers, slumped on the sofa and guzzling a Bud, wouldn't want to watch spoiled millionaires sipping Dom from the back of a Rolls. But in 1978, CBS executive Kim LeMasters decided the rich were ready for prime time. Lorimar producer David Jacobs pitched an idea for the middle-class soap Knots. LeMasters turned him down and asked for a ''saga'' about a clan of conniving oil barons.

''We thought it might be satisfying for the audience to see people as rich as this as miserable as this,'' says Jacobs. And it was. America was enthralled with the fabulously wealthy Ewings, who lived on a palatial ranch tended by doting servants and drove to work in Mercedes rather than pickups.

Over a dozen glittery soaps bubbled up to copy Dallas, but only four survived. CBS has renewed its two weaker soaps; it can't risk losing 14 million homes that watch Dallas or the 11.3 million that follow Falcon Crest. ''We're not No. 1 any more, or even No. 10, but we do win our time slot, which, regrettably on CBS these days, is a rare occasion,'' says Katzman of Dallas.

Now only the low-glitz Knots, which Jacobs revived as a Dallas spinoff for CBS, seems sure to last beyond another season. While its richer soap sisters lost 16 percent to 36 percent of their women viewers this season, Knots bypassed them in the ratings and gained 5 percent.

''Knots isn't as glamorous, the houses aren't as big and the people don't make as much money,'' says fan Kathleen McCloskey, a dean at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

New York lawyer Rita Chimel still follows all four soaps because they're ''such total, complete trash.'' But at least on Knots, ''Karen and Mack live in a normal house and take care of their own kids,'' she says. ''That's why I like it better. You don't feel as embarrassed watching it.''

The soaps have served up their de rigueur finales during the past two weeks. For Dynasty, the biggest cliffhanger will be whether it returns at all next season. It is down 36 percent among women, advertisers' prized target, and has been hurt by a time-slot switch and little promotion. Ominously, ABC executives won't discuss the show's fate.

The cliffhanger tonight at 9 on WCPX-Channel 6 will be of a far more personal sort for the unadorned Knots Landing. Lately, the faithful husband Mack has been tempted by a new woman on the scene. Fans will end the season tonight wondering whether he will cheat on his wife, Karen, and if so, can this marriage be saved?
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">In this week's edition of the "DYNASTY" episode guide I'll be looking at season 4 which began in September 1983 when enormous hype surrounded the show and its stars, which moved into the top-3, finally snapping at DALLAS' heels.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Again, I found some discrepancies with regard to episode guides you can normally find on the web (and on the official DVDs):

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- episode "Carousel" aired December 21 (back-to-back with the Chrustmas episode of "Hotel") and not December 14

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">- episode "The Engagement" aired on April 25 and not on April 18 (when the show was pre-empted).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Being now an established hit, "Dynasty" moved this season to an earlier timeslot, since ABC wanted to use it as a launching pad for a compatible lead-out show at 10:00pm.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">"Dynasty" producer Aaron Spelling (who I believe by then had 7 shows airing on ABC) came up with that companion series, finding inspiration in Arthur Hailey's novel "HOTEL."

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The two series would air back-to-back for 4 seasons until spring 1987 (when ABC decided to move "Dynasty" back to 10:00pm and ship "Hotel" off to Saturday nights due to plummeting ratings).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Finally, since "DYNASTY" was now a major hit, ABC wanted more fresh episodes (plus 3) and the season length was extended from 26 to 33 weeks.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">SUMMER HIATUS / RERUNS:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">NOTE: Unlike the previous 3 seasons when ABC reran most of the episodes from early June through mid September, in 1984 the network repeated only the final 4 episodes (beginning in late August) simply to refresh the viewers' memory prior to the new season.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Although I'm not sure about the reasons for that decision, I would assume the reruns would have been interrupted by ABC's live telecasts of the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and political conventions (as part of the presidential campaign 1984), so they opted not to have them.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Plus the show was ABC's top series and it probably didn't need additional support through summer reruns. ABC filled the remaining available timeslots between May and late August with reruns of movies and mini-series. Those 4 episodes were repeated as follows:
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">August 29 #4.24 "The Check" (R)
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Sept. 26, 1984 NEW (5th) SEASON BEGINS!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426638679882620813.post-17610226357174307472011-05-15T11:00:00.000-07:002011-05-15T11:41:16.985-07:00DYNASTY Poll Results: The Most Bizarre Storyline

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I recently asked you what the most bizarre storyline in Dynasty's 9-season run was (and there have sure been quite a few of those). Well, not surprisingly, Fallon's extraterrestrial adventures took the top honors.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Earlier today, I posted the above video of the actual scene with comments from Richard Shapiro (the man who came up with that mess), Gordon Thomson (who gave us a humorous insight into what happened behind the scenes) and of course Emma Samms (whose character got abducted) dubbed in.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Since this was such an obvious winner, I'll note that your other top choices included Krystle being replaced by a crass double and Matthew Blaisdell's gun-toting return. All courtesy of those wicked post-Moldavian years.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I have to admit I actually thought the Rita storyline was a lot of fun (her facial expressions of anger and frustration - especially after meeting L.B. - were hilarious). Also, I found the "Jeff ODs on paint" storyline very entertaining. Here are the results of the poll:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Fallon is abducted by aliens 71%
Krystle is replaced by a double 12%
Matthew Blaisdell returns 11%
Jeff overdoses on paint 5%
Kirby falls in love with her rapist 5%
Cast gunned down in Moldavia 5%
Adam learns he is not Adam 3%
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The FILOLI Mansion in Woodside and Arden Villa and its lily pond in Pasadena often spring to mind when one thinks of "The Carrington Mansion." Back in seasons 1 and 2 a different property in Beverly Hills was used prominently for filming exteriors.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The swimming pool in which Steven almost drowns in early season 2, along with garages, tennis courts and a driveway were located at <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">1441 North Angelo Drive in Beverly Hills.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">When the brass decided to ramp up the glitz for season 3, they switched to Arden Villa (which makes its fist appearance in the 4th episode of that season titled "The Will").

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I wish they could have at least come back to this property in those <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">increasingly <span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">claustrophobic, studio-set latter seasons. The outdoor "mansion" scenes added significant quality to "Dynasty."
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Earlier this week, it was reported Ashton Kutcher would replace Charlie Sheen on the CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men" and his per-episode (that's 20-minute episode) salary will be 'only' $800.000-900.000,- (down from Sheen's 1,2 mil + profits). 80s stars could only dream of such exuberant salaries.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Of course, $1 million today is more like $500.000,- in the 80s. Still, those shows used to attract much bigger audiences ("Dynasty" would regularly pull in about 40 million viewers in its heyday, and there were fewer people around, so it was a greater share of the general population than 40 million would be today).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">And yet, the highest salaries on TV in the 80s used to be in the $100.000-150.000 range. In this video segment from the late 80s, John Forsythe's reported salary is $100.000,- per episode.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Although his co-star Joan Collins famously negotiated a higher salary several times, he had a stipulation in his contract that ensured his salary was always the highest among the cast.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">So, when Collins failed to show up for work at the beginning of season 6 (in July 1985) and Spelling subsequently agreed to pay her more money, that immediately ensured a raise for Forsythe, as well.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Although Collins loves to say how she "didn't really make that much money from 'Dynasty' back then," it's certainly true she would have been much better off if "Dynasty" were a top-10 hit today.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">It would seem like a no-brainer decision. But, John James said he actually had to think whether he wanted to return to "Dynasty" after his failed spin-off got the boot.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">By season 8 "Dynasty" was no longer TV's hottest show, in fact after all the kings, queens, doppelgangers, and UFOs one may have had to think twice if 7 years wasn't enough.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">But there were two more years left in Dynasty - that's 44 paychecks and many actors in Hollywood just can't (and shouldn't) say no to regular work.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">As John James explained in October 1987:

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">According to a later interview, among the things he'd had to do during his final 2 years on the show, was veto a planned storyline that would have had his character have an affair with his sister Monica (who suddenly and conveniently wasn't his sister).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Oh, well... I'm sure JJ's stock broker (whom we've heard a lot about) agreed it was worth it.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426638679882620813.post-46636209466580459042011-05-14T13:15:00.000-07:002011-05-14T13:26:03.229-07:00FILOLI Wallpapers: Mansion Terrace

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I haven't posted one of these in a while, so here's another HQ pic from my Filoli collection (which I tend to use on my desktop) - a mansion terrace on a sunny late winter afternoon (or is it early spring morning?).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Oh, how I wish they could have done more outdoor shooting at the mansion, and - on a regular basis (they only filmed the pilot there and then used stock footage as establishing shots).
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Can't you just picture Krystle at this terrace, wrapped in an elegant scarf, enjoying one of her private moments, deep in her thoughts, as Pamela Sue's Fallon (or Alexis, of course) come marching out to ruin it for her? Sigh...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6426638679882620813.post-21398422477617285362011-05-14T12:45:00.000-07:002011-05-14T13:30:54.079-07:00Were They Right to Bring Wayne Northrop Back in Season 7?

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The producers considered bringing Wayne Northrop's season 1 character Michael - Blake's nosy chauffeur and Fallon's part-time lover - back in season 3. Once they finally got around to it in season 7, I'm not sure I really cared for seeing him on the show again.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">And my indifference to seeing Michael return doesn't really have anything to do with the whole Karen Cellini mess. I don't think I would have enjoyed watching his tired schemes had he been paired off with the lovely Catherine Oxenberg instead either.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Back in season 1 it was a lot of fun watching the spoiled brat Fallon (played by the brilliant Pamela Sue Martin) jerk Michael around, while hmm... exchanging ideas on the upcoming football season with members of daddy's team.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">But then they reintroduced him with that sloppy re-enactment of the infamous bathtub scene (the frame-by-frame comparison was one of my first YouTube videos in 2008) and I couldn't have been more underwhelmed.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Once they got rid of Cellini (both Amanda and Michael were originally supposed to have stuck around till the season finale when the mob would have had the limo carrying them and Blake to a court hearing bombed) they didn't know what to do with him.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Perhaps the original idea for season 3 would have worked better - Fallon was supposed to battle it out with Adam in court over the control of Jeff's estate, while he lay ODed on paint at the hospital.

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Adam would have brought Michael back to testify at the hearing and help him defeat Fallon (I'll tell you more about the original plans for season 3 in an upcoming post - a big thanks to Gilles for supplying me with season 3 bible).

<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">Did you think Michael was a good character worthy of coming back who just happened to fall victim to a messy season? Or should they have never bothered once he served his purpose in the inaugural season?
