The sixth season of "Dynasty," which aired on ABC in the US in the 1985/86 TV season, is coming to region 2 DVD across Europe...
...just months after the late June / early July release of season 5, as several European distributors (including Amazon in France where the 8-disc collection hits stores on December 1) recently announced on their sites.
"Dynasty" DVDs appear to be selling better in Europe than in the US where fans of the soap opera have had to endure split season releases and continuing uncertainty over future seasons.
Although initial "Dynasty" DVDs began selling in the US, Europe took the lead last fall when a full season 4 DVD was released months prior to the February 2010 US release of season 4: vol. 2.
As of to date, there is still no word on the season 5 release for the US (region 1), or whether it will also be split into two volumes, as the previous two seasons.
The US is, of course, more of a "Dallas" territory. All but one of the 14 seasons of "the granddaddy of soaps," which established the prime time soap genre on television in the late 70s, have been released there. And that final season is expected to hit stores early next year.
According to Judith Moose, author of "Glamour, Greed, Glory: Dynasty," Paramount US also has no immediate plans to release season 2 of another Aaron Spelling soap - "Arthur Hailey's Hotel," which aired in the post-"Dynasty" slot (Wednesdays at 10pm). Season 1 of that series was released in the summer of 2009.
If "Dynasty" DVDs continue to sell well across Europe, we may be seeing seasons 7 and 8 next year and the final season in the summer of 2012.
No word yet on the "Dynasty" spin-off "The Colbys," whose first season aired simultaneously with the forthcoming sixth season of "Dynasty."
Well, that is way better than the way they are handling "Falcon Crest" DVD4s, that is really horrible! Sigh!
